DHAKA. – Rev. Frank Quinlivan, C.S.C., 80, passed away at a private hospital in the capital Dhaka, Bangladesh after a short illness.
Fr. Quinlivan entered Holy Cross seminary in 1957. He completed his formation at Holy Cross Foreign Mission Seminary in Washington in 1968 and was ordained a Holy Cross priest on April 4, 1970.
After ordination, Fr. Quinlivan worked for the Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of Fort-Wayne-South Bend from 1970 to 1979. From 1979-1985, he served in three parishes under Dhaka Archdiocese and Holy Cross Initiative in Bangladesh. In 1985, he returned back to the United States to serve as the Novice Director at the Holy Cross Novitiate in Cascade, Colorado until 1991 before serving as Assistant Provincial until 1994. In 1994, Fr. Quinlivan returned to Bangladesh to serve in the Oriental Institute, a Holy Cross-run training formation center in the southern Barishal district for two years. Also, during this time until 2005, he served as a parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church in Sreemangal in northeast Bangladesh, where he set up schools, boarding hostels, and other facilities to promote education and social development among the most poor and marginalized groups. From 2006-2012, he served as Provincial Superior of the Sacred Heart Province in Bangladesh. After 2012, Fr. Quinlivan served in various roles including chaplain of Kumudini Hospital, Tangail district, director of Holy Cross Retreat Center in Gazipur, rector of Moreau Seminary, and development director of Notre Dame University of Bangladesh, both in Dhaka.
“We have lost a pioneer whose selfless life is a great model for us to follow. He came to serve people, loved them, and became one of them,” said Bangladeshi Holy Cross priest Father Subroto Boniface Tolentino.
A Memorial Mass will be held at the Church of Loretto at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. ET.
Fr. Quinlivan is buried at the Holy Cross priests’ cemetery in Bhadun, Gazipur district near Dhaka.
