The Holy Cross Mission Center is pleased to share written reflections from the Holy Cross participants in the 2024 Ganguly Exchange, an eight-week international ministry opportunity available to the U.S. Province’s men in formation. Their stories from Bangladesh, Kenya, Mexico, and Peru offer a window into the Congregation’s missionary charism.

“Life in Monterrey, Mexico”
By Edwin Donnelly, C.S.C.
———
My time in Monterrey was filled with vibrant experiences, cultural immersion, and personal growth. The first days set a dynamic tone for me and Tim Wymore, C.S.C.—my peer with whom I traveled. Arriving at 9:30 pm and diving straight into local life by attending a quinceañera was an unexpected but delightful start. Engaging with the community, savoring tacos, and experiencing the festivities was a warm introduction to Monterrey’s lively culture.
Our involvement with the parish, particularly attending the final profession of Sr. Nieves and participating in a Youth Mass, deepened our connection to the community. The Youth Mass, which attracts individuals from their late teens to mid-30s, is a hub of activity and energy. Sharing meals with the Youth Group, though entirely in Spanish, was an enriching experience, despite the challenge of navigating language barriers. For those of us who are not fluent, being immersed in Spanish continually was draining, yet it served as a valuable lesson in resilience and adaptation.
Physical well-being has been a notable aspect of this experience. The University of Monterrey’s gym has been a sanctuary for maintaining our fitness routines, a crucial factor given the demanding schedule and the heat. Finding ways to integrate exercise into our daily lives, despite the busy and sometimes overwhelming schedule, has been essential. It’s clear that without deliberate effort, maintaining a regular workout routine in the context of a busy schedule and different living conditions could be challenging.
The differences between Monterrey’s affluent areas, like San Pedro, and the more impoverished neighborhood of Guadalupe, where our parish is located, were striking. This contrast highlighted the social disparities and provided a deeper understanding of the local context. The parish’s environment, while modest, is filled with warmth and a strong sense of community, which has been a source of inspiration and joy.
Our time at the Rehabilitation Center prompted important reflections on healthcare and ethics. Engaging with the intake process was eye-opening, raising questions about the intersection of healthcare practices and moral considerations. These experiences have offered us profound insights into the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and the ethical complexities involved in addressing their needs.
The community life at the parish, led by Fr. Armando, C.S.C., has been a cornerstone of our stay. Living and sharing meals with him and the local community has fostered a strong sense of connection and support. The communal aspects of our daily life—whether it’s engaging in joyful banter, participating in community nights, or attending Mass—have reinforced the sense of being part of a larger family in a different cultural setting.
Navigating the logistical aspects of life here, from transportation to meal planning, has been a practical challenge. The varying travel times to the University and the need to adapt to the local food situation have required flexibility and resourcefulness. Ensuring access to hydration and managing personal well-being amidst a rigorous schedule has been crucial.
