Rev. Robert R. Baker, C.S.C.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Rev. Robert Rappleye Baker, C.S.C., passed away in Lima, Peru at the age of 77 on Monday, January 11, 2021.
He was born on May 28, 1943, in the city of Elmira in the State of New York, the son of Robert R. Baker and Mary Jane (May) Baker. His elementary education was in the public schools of Pawtucket, R.I., after his father was transferred to the Central Cascades of the Corning Glass Plant.
He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1961, began his novitiate in Bennington, Vermont on July 15, 1962 and professed his first vows on July 16, 1963. He studied Philosophy at Stonehill College where he graduated in 1966, after which he studied in a Master’s program at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he served as a counselor at the National Training School for Boys. In 1969 he received his Master’s degree in Theology from the University of Notre Dame Notre Dame, Ind. He spent the summer of 1969 in Detroit at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and later in the fall of 1969 he was appointed as a deacon to Saint Pius X Parish in Granger, Ind. He was ordained a priest on April 11, 1970 in North Easton, Mass.
In 1970-1971, Fr. Baker taught at Notre Dame High School, in Bridgeport, Conn., and in 1971-1972 he had an 8-month experience in Cartavio, Peru in order to improve his Spanish. Between May 1972 and June 1974, he was appointed Vicar for Hispanic Ministry in South Bend, Ind., and accompanied the Hispanic population in South Bend. In this way, the Lord would prepare Father Robert for lifelong service as a Holy Cross missionary and priest in Peru.
MISSION IN PERU
The 8-month experience in Cartavio was fundamental in awakening Fr. Robert’s desire to serve in Peru. He himself said that when the Congregation invited him to return to the mission in Peru, he immediately replied, “Yes.” In 1974 he arrived in Chimbote to support the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish.
In 1976, Fr. Baker together with Fr. Robert Plasker c.s.c. were invited by the Archbishop of Lima Cardinal Juan Landázuri R., to take on a new Parish for the Congregation, Our Lord of Hope in the nascent area of Canto Grande. The pastoral work was demanding but rewarding. The cultural diversity of the men and women religious who came from different countries and jurisdictions, and the development of a joint pastoral ministry with sisters, brothers, priests and laity was, according to Fr. Robert, the greatest contribution that the Congregation of Holy Cross brought to the sector.
During his time in Peru, he had various responsibilities. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a professor at the Higher Institute of Theological Studies (ISET by its acronym in Spanish), while also serving as Director of Studies and Director of Formation of the youth who entered the Congregation, in addition to being a Parish Vicar.
On February 1, 2001, Fr. Robert was appointed Pastor of the Santa Cruz Parish in Chimbote. He had to endure very difficult years and 2005 saw an end to the Congregation’s parish administration, whose service had been very dear to him.
In 2005 he replaced Fr. Guillermo Persia, C.S.C., as District Superior, and was later elected in 2006, a position he held until 2012. In 2007 he was appointed director of Family Rosary in Peru, a work that Fr. Jaime Phalan, C.S.C., had led for years. It was not easy to follow in his footsteps, but Fr. Robert continued to spread the Apostolate throughout Peru, writing and designing the brochures that would later be distributed throughout Peru and Latin America. With great conviction, Fr. Robert would say: “The Apostleship of the Rosary is not an office, because we care about formation and prayer in families, providing a solid Marian, Catholic formation.” For health reasons, he had to relinquish this responsibility in 2018, and he went to Holy Cross House in the United States, to regain strength and recover his health.
However, for Fr. Robert, Peru was his life, and as soon as he felt a little better, he returned to Peru on August 28, 2018, to continue providing service to the people of Canto Grande. He was a natural educator, and although in Peru he never formally worked in a school, “education in the Faith” was the motive of his life.
His parents Robert and Mary Jane Baker precede him in death, and he is survived by his sisters Pati Baker who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and Judy (Joseph) Scope, residing in Cleveland, Ohio.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the second wave of this virus in Peru, a wake was not held. He was buried on Tuesday, January 12th, at the Congregation Cemetery located in Campo Fe de Huachipa. He was accompanied by Monsignor Arturo Colgan, Monsignor Jorge Izaguirre, Fr. José Luis Tineo (pastor of El Señor de la Esperanza), Fr. Juan Phalen (Assistant to the Superior in Peru) and Fr. Alfredo Hernández. All of his other brothers were present in prayer and in working in the mission of Peru, which Fr. Robert loved very much.
A Mass was held with the entire congregation, in person and virtually, on Wednesday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m. (Peru time) in the San Oscar Romero Chapel (Bayovar) of the El Señor de la Esperanza Parish. You can virtually watch it in Facebook Congregacion de Santa Cruz – Distrito Peru. He was buried at the community cemetery in Lima, Campo Fe- Huachipa.
Fr. Robert loved that community very much and it was there that he celebrated his 25 years of priesthood. He wanted to celebrate his 50 years of priesthood in the same chapel, but the COVID-19 pandemic did not permit it.

LIMA, PERÚ. Padre Roberto Rappleye Baker, C.S.C., 77 años, falleció en Lima, el lunes 11 deenero del 2021
El Padre Roberto Baker, C.S.C. nació el 28 de mayo de 1943, en la ciudad de Elmira en el Estado deNueva York; fue hijo de Robert R. Baker y Mary Jane (May) Baker. Estudio la educación primaria en loscolegios públicos de Pawtucket, R.I., luego que su padre fue trasladado a la Central Cascadas de la PlantaCorning Glass donde trabajaba y toda la familia se trasladó al Este.
Ingresó a la Congregación de Santa Cruz en 1961, comenzó su noviciado el 15 de Julio de 1962 y profesósus primeros votos el 16 de Julio de 1963. Hizo estudios de Filosofía en Stonehill College donde segraduó en 1966 y posteriormente realizó estudios de Maestría en el programa de Holy Cross College enWashington, D.C. donde colaboró como consejero en el National Training School for Boys. En 1969recibió su maestría en Teología de la Universidad de Notre Dame, Indiana, Estados Unidos. El verano de1969 lo pasó en Detroit en la Catedral del Santísimo Sacramento y posteriormente en el otoño de 1969fue destinado como diácono a la Parroquia Pio X en Granger, Indiana. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 11 deabril de 1970 en North Easton, Massachusetts.
En 1970-1971, el P. Baker enseñó en la escuela Notre Dame High School, en Bridgeport, Connecticut,luego 1971-1972, tuvo una experiencia de 8 meses en Cartavio, Perú con la finalidad de mejorar sucastellano. Entre mayo de 1972 y junio 1974 fue nombrado Vicario para el Ministerio Hispano en SouthBend y acompañó a la población hispana en South Bend, Indiana. De esta manera el Señor iríapreparando a Padre Roberto para un servicio de por vida como misionero y sacerdote de Santa Cruz enel Perú.
MISION EN PERÚ.
Su experiencia de 8 meses en Cartavio, Perú, fue fundamental para despertar en P. Roberto ese deseode servir en el Perú. El mismo dice que cuando la Congregación lo invitó a regresar a la misión de Perú,inmediatamente dijo “Sí”.
En 1974 llegó a Chimbote, y apoyo en la Parroquia Nuestra Señora delPerpetuo Socorro.
En 1976, P. Roberto Baker junto con el P. Roberto Plasker c.s.c., fueron invitados por el arzobispo deLima Cardenal Juan Landázuri R., para asumir una nueva Parroquia para la Congregación, El Señor de laEsperanza en la naciente zona de Canto Grande. El trabajo pastoral era inmenso pero gratificante. Ladiversidad cultural de los religiosos y religiosas que provenían de diversos países y jurisdicciones, y eldesarrollo de una pastoral de conjunto con hermanas, hermanos, sacerdotes de diferentescongregaciones, y laicos, fue según P. Roberto el gran aporte que la Congregación de Santa Cruz trajo alsector.
Durante su tiempo en Perú, tuvo varias responsabilidades. En los años 80’ y 90’ profesor en ISET(Instituto Superior de Estudios Teológicos), fue Director de Estudios y Director de Formación de losjóvenes que ingresaban a la Congregación, además de ser Vicario Parroquial.
El 1 de febrero del 2001, P. Roberto fue nombrado Párroco de la Parroquia Santa Cruz en Chimbote.Tuvo que soportar años muy difíciles y en 2005 asumir el cierre de la administración parroquial porparte de la Congregación, cuyo servicio para él había sido muy querido.
El año 2005 reemplazo a P. Guillermo Persia c.s.c., como Superior del Distrito, siendo luego elegido en2006, cargo que desempeñó hasta 2012. En el 2007 fue nombrado director del Apostolado del Rosarioen Familia, obra que por años había dirigido el P. Jaime Phalan c.s.c.. No era fácil seguir sus pasos, peroP. Roberto continuó difundiendo el Apostolado a lo largo del Perú, escribiendo y diseñando los folletosque luego se distribuirían a lo largo del Perú y América Latina. Con mucha convicción P. Roberto decía:“el Apostolado del Rosario no es una oficina, pues nos preocupamos de la formación y la oración en lasfamilias, entregando una sólida formación mariana y católica”. En 2018 y por motivos de salud tuvo querenunciar a esta responsabilidad y fue a Holy Cross House en los Estados Unidos, para recobrar la fuerzay mejorar su deteriorada salud.
Sin embargo, para P. Roberto, el Perú era su vida, y sintiéndose un poco mejor regresó al Perú el 28 deagosto del 2018, para seguir brindando su servicio a la gente de Canto Grande. Era un educador innato,y aunque en Perú nunca trabajó formalmente en un colegio, la “educación en la Fe” fue el motivo de suvida.
Le han precedido en la muerte sus padres Robert y Mary Jane Baker. Viven sus hermanas Pati Bakerquien vive en Phoenix Arizona, y Judy (Joseph) Scope en la ciudad de Cleveland, Ohio.
Debido a la situación de la pandemia COVID19, y en este contexto de la segunda ola del virus, al igualque la gente en Perú, no pudo tener un velorio. Su sepultación fue el martes 12 de enero en elCementerio de la Congregación que está ubicado en Campo Fe de Huachipa. Le acompañaron Mons.Arturo Colgan, Mons. Jorge Izaguirre, P. José Luis Tineo (párroco de El Señor de la Esperanza), P. JuanPhalen (Asistente del Superior en el Perú) y P. Alfredo Hernández. Todos sus demás hermanosestuvieron en oración y trabajando en la misión del Perú, a la cual P. Roberto amó mucho.
Una misa con toda la feligresía, de manera presencial y virtual, se tuvo el miércoles 13 de enero a las7:00 p.m. (hora Perú) en la capilla San Oscar Romero (Bayovar) de la Parroquia El Señor de laEsperanza. La misa puede ser vista en Facebook Congregación de Santa Cruz – Distrito del Perú. P.Roberto quería mucho a la comunidad de esa capilla y fue ahí donde celebró sus 25 años de sacerdote.
Quiso celebrar en esa misma capilla sus 50 años de sacerdote, pero la pandemia Covid19 no se lopermitió.
Gracias P. Roberto por tu vida compartida en este valle de Canto Grande, en Chimbote, Cartavio y elapostolado hispano en los Estados Unidos.
