Logo Revealed for the New Holy Family Mission in Papua New Guinea

In the coming months, eight Holy Cross priests and brothers, including Br. James Walters, C.S.C., of the U.S. Province, will depart for Papua New Guinea. This select group will inaugurate the Holy Family Mission, the Congregation’s first new mission in over 40 years. We at the Holy Cross Mission Center are happy to share the Holy Family Mission’s logo and its description, adapted from text provided by the Congregation’s General Administration, which is leading this new missionary endeavor.

In July, the Congregation of Holy Cross’s General Administration revealed the logo for the new Holy Family Mission in the Diocese of Bougainville. The logo was designed by Br. Adolf Mugume (EA), Director of Communications, in consultation with the Congregation’s Commission for Mission, chaired by Fr. Emmanuel Kallarackal, C.S.C., First Assistant and Vicar General.

Symbols on the Holy Family Mission Logo

The boat signifies our movement to the new mission on the island of Bougainville.

The golden rounded halo above the boat signifies the protecting and providential hands of God, while the inner halo signifies the Church as the People of God.

The Cross above the boat represents the hope that the Cross of Christ brings to humanity, as captured in our motto: Ave Crux, Spes Unica — “Hail the Cross, our only hope.”

The lighted candle signifies our sharing of the Light of Christ as educators in the faith.

The doves signify peace and harmony for the people of the region.

The stars in the outer border remind us both of the Star of the Magi, which led them to Christ the Savior as our missionaries will be leading people to Christ, and the constellation on the flag of Papua New Guinea.
