Notre Dame, Ind. – The Congregation of Holy Cross recognized a valued lay collaborator, friend and Holy Cross parishioner on Tuesday, May 10. A long-time friend of the priests and brothers of Holy Cross, John W. Rosenthal Sr. received the Spirit of Holy Cross award for his recent commitments as a benefactor to the Province, volunteer solicitor for major campaign gifts, volunteer chair of the Province’s Development Advisory Committee, and chair of the Regional Events phase of the Following in the Footsteps of a Great Band of Men campaign–which provides financial resources for the Indiana Province’s formation programs, international missions, and health care for retiring and elderly priests and brothers. Rev. Edwin H. Obermiller, C.S.C., Assistant Provincial, presented Rosenthal with the award on behalf of Provincial Superior Rev. David T. Tyson and the Province.
A native of Mishawaka, Ind., Rosenthal graduated from the University of Notre Dame, a Holy Cross university, in 1981 with a degree in business administration with a concentration in finance. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Member of Rosenthal Partners Capital AdvisorsLLC. He has also served in leadership roles at Northern Region of Old National Bank and St. Joseph Capital Corporation and St. Joseph Capital Bank. In 2002, Rosenthal was the recipient of the 2002 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the northern District of Indiana.
A tireless advocate for Holy Cross, Rosenthal’s relationship with the community is an alignment of his personal mission and values with those of Holy Cross–specifically through his volunteerism, his lay ministry with the Holy Cross community, and through his philanthropy.
Rosenthal’s other current charitable works include current member and founding chairman of the Women’s Care Foundation Board; member of the board of trustees and chairman of the finance committee for Holy Cross College; member of the board of trustees of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center; and chairman of Order of Malta (Indiana area). Past works include serving as member of the council of advisors at the Center for the Homeless; past chairman of the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. (Hospice); president of the school board at Marian High School; and as a member of the school board of the diocese of Ft. Wayne-South Bend.
He serves as liturgical coordinator, lector and senior master of ceremonies at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of Notre Dame.
John and his wife Mary have three children – John II, Nate and Ashley. In attendance Tuesday night were Rosenthal’s many close friends, which also included priests of Holy Cross, and his family members, including his wife Mary and the couple’s son, John II, and his wife, Mary Clare. The dinner and ceremony were held at the Morris Inn. Prior to the dinner, Rev. Edwin H. Obermiller, C.S.C., celebrated a Mass for Rosenthal’s family and friends at the Log Chapel.
