Stonehill Recreational Sports is located within the Student Affairs Division of Stonehill College, a college founded and guided by the principles, philosophy and spirituality of Holy Cross. Stonehill Skyhawks are students, faculty, staff and administrators within the Stonehill Community who benefit from the college’s variety of sports, fitness, wellness and recreational activities. Since arriving in Canto Grande in 1976 where the Peruvian government had recently relocated hundreds of migrant families squatting in the city, the Congregation of Holy Cross has worked with the people there in a variety of ministries. Beginning by founding Our Lord of Hope parish that today serves over 250,000 parishioners, Yancana Huasy was later founded to work with children with various physical, mental, and emotional challenges, as well as Fe y Alegria #25, a grade school model that also trains students in a trade. Stonehill College has often assisted the missions in Peru through financial gifts in addition to sending students and employees through HOPE immersions.
In 2019, Stonehill raised over $1500 in support of the Holy Cross missions in Canto Grande, Lima, Peru, an area of great need. Teams from different areas on campus–student groups, campus police, health services, administrators, athletics, and Holy Cross religious–donned their Stonehill gear for what turned into a enjoyable Friday evening. Their assistance was able to help fund organizations who work with those in need in the Canto Grande area, a place Stonehill has had ties to for over 50 years.
